goodwill among nations

http://news.bbc.co.uk/
India has restored telephone links between Indian and Pakistani-controlled Kashmir to enable people to speak to their relatives after the earthquake. The service was cut 15 years ago after militants took up arms against India.

India has set up four centres in Jammu, Srinagar, Tangdar and Uri and telephone calls are being offered free of charge. The 24-hour line will run for a fortnight. People can also dial Muzaffarabad from their homes through an operator facility by dialling 186. The move has been widely welcomed by Kashmiris.

"Confirmation of a final toll will be difficult because many bodies are buried beneath rubble. U.N. officials said that, so far, they were adhering to the Pakistani government's confirmed casualty toll, which was 39,422.

The United Nations has estimated that 2 million are homeless."

earthquake in pakistan

These are the letters that I've sent regarding our response to the earthquake in Pakistan -

http://www.npr.org/contact/
Dear NPR,
I just want to say “THANK YOU SO MUCH” for actually covering the situation in Pakistan. Many other networks have not chosen to do so.

Sincerely Yours,
Molly Magdalain

Dear NY Times –
I just wanted to say ‘thank you’ for mentioning the earthquake in Pakistan on at least the main page of your website. I am honestly concerned that most major news networks are not covering the story – it seems to be some sort of political and/or racial bias. I hope you won’t share the sentiment. Surely the fact that 4 million people are close to freezing to death constitutes a news-worthy story. It seems to me that they need our support and energy – please publish news about the earthquake.

Sincerely Yours,
Molly Magdalain

Dear ABC News,
I just have to say that I am SHOCKED AND HORRIFIED that you don’t even mention the earthquake in Pakistan on the main section of your news website. Are you telling me that the flooding in the northeast (I live in nyc so I’m actually affected by it) is more important than 4 million people who are on the verge of freezing to death? In international news you list ‘Iraquis Increase Security for Historic Vote’ above the earthquake – ARE YOU CRAZY???? I’m writing this letter because I am embarrassed to be an American citizen for so many reasons but this is really beyond my belief. Do you really think we are this Stupid? I really hope I can show you that we are Not. Please report information on the earthquake.

Sincerely Yours,
Molly Magdalain

Dear CBS,
I am glad to see that you, unlike Many other major news networks, have actually listed the earthquake in Pakistan as a headline story. Nonetheless, it seems strange that you still downplay the fact that 4 million people are freezing to death!! You seem to claim that Bush talking to the troops in Iraq and the bird flu are definitely more important stories – is this some sort of unwritten agreement between news networks? Does this have something to do with race? I honestly don’t understand because these people need a lot of our help – if nothing else our support and energy - and I don’t see why you would fall short of expressing that to the world. Is there some reason that I don’t understand – please help inform me if you can since that is supposed to be your job and you are supposed to be un-biased but, then again, you are American. Who knows what the hell that really means.

Sincerely Yours,
Molly Magdalain

Dear USA Today,
I am extremely saddened that you fail to list the earthquake in Pakistan as a ‘headline story.’ You obviously consider corporate lawsuits, mortgage rates and president bush rallying his troops in Iraq much more important than 4 million people who are freezing to death. Have you ever considered that your support of this situation might help a human being – does that person’s race effect your consideration of the situation? I’m just wondering because it seems odd to me in a really strange way – it makes me wonder what it is that you report !!??

Sincerely Yours,
Molly Magdalain

Dear MSN News,
As I look at your site today – I see that the “top” stories are about celebrities, the war in iraq, rebels in russia, the rain in the northeast – even whether or not angelina jolie could president (as if anyone gives a shit!) – yet there is NO information about, NO respect for, and NO concern about the earthquake in Pakistan which has uprooted 4 million people. Obviously you must think this is not American news – this is not entertaining – this is not what you deem important. I think this is DISGUSTING and I think it is a real testament to the impotence and the pointlessness of the American media. If you can write me a letter explaining why this story is not important then I would love to hear it – I would love to know what your reasoning is; however, I really doubt that you have much capacity to reason considering the on-going “quality” of your work.

Sincerely Yours,
Molly Magdalain

Dear CNN,
I have to say that I am thoroughly DISGUSTED by your lack of attention to the earthquake in Pakistan. 4 million people have lost their homes (and are dying right now due to LACK OF SUPPORT) and you are still filling your website with stories about approval ratings - the war in iraq – celebrities - and pretty much NOTHING about one of the biggest disasters of our decade. While I already expect other news networks to be cheesy and class-less – I had hoped that you would show a little more respect. I was hoping you would have a little dignity for our world. Obviously I was wrong !! I am embarrassed and saddened by your behavior.

Sincerely Yours,
Molly Magdalain

Dear Fox News,
I have to say that I am thoroughly disgusted by your lack of attention to the earthquake in Pakistan. 4 million people have lost their homes and you are still filling your website with stories about approval ratings - the war in iraq - and anything else that has nothing to do with NEWS. I realize that you really aren't in the business of reporting news - you are in the business of controlling us with what you call 'Entertainment.' For the record - I am not entertained and I am not even slightly informed about the real state of affairs in the world. Obviously you don't know - you don't want to know - and you don't care about what's really going on. Someday American citizens will be more discerning - more conscious - and they will no longer have a need for your Bullshit !!!!

Sincerely Yours,
Molly Magdalain
